UW Hillel hosts Camp Ramah Shabbat thanks to KOACH

Camp Ramah Shabbat F2011

On December 9, 2011 UW Hillel held a Camp Ramah Shabbat dinner on campus, sponsored by KOACH and the UW Hillel. It was an enormous success. It was held at the apartment of Danny Mann, a sophomore at the UW and Camp Ramah Wisconsin alum. 25 people came from many Camp Ramahs, including Wisconsin, Berkshires, Canada, California, Darom and Rockies. It was planned by a panel of students and it was overseen by Rabbi Andrea Steinberger. At the dinner there were Shabbat candle lighting, brachot, a dvar Torah, zmirot, and plenty of ruach. The food was provided by Cafe Osher, the kosher caterer located at the UW Hillel.

This event was an enormous success. It felt like a "grass-roots" event, with students at the lead, coming together to celebrate Camp Ramahniks at the University of Wisconsin. It was entirely student-led. It attracted a large number of students who immediately signed up, within a day of the event being announced. It attracted students from all years in school, all areas of the country, and all types of involvement on campus. We see this as a way to engage students in Conservative Judaism on campus. We hope to use KOACH funds to host another student-led Camp Ramah Shabbat dinner spring semester on campus.

We look forward to continued programs celebrating Conservative Jewish life on campus, with a special focus this year on the Camp Ramah contingent on the UW campus.

With gratitude to the students and to the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, and wishes for a Happy Chanukah, Rabbi Andrea Steinberger
